FAITH AND CULTURE

Sisters Spring. The Austrian occupation of Switzerland was harsh
(giving rise, for example, to the legend of William Tell who fought
the evil governor Gessler). Around the start of the 14th century
there were three devout sisters whose father was Walter Greter,
the innkeeper at Greppen, along the lakeside. Their scheming
Austrian overlord demanded that the three girls be brought to his
castle, but they managed to escape his evil intentions and came
to live here at Kaltbad. This large, and hidden, hole in the rocks
was where they settled, and constructed a rough dwelling with
branches and leaves for a roof. Their father secretly sent a servant
with a few goats to support them. The interior of the chapel
Legend tells that when the last of these pious sisters passed
away, a crystal-clear spring started to flow out of the rocks (as it and one "Credo" for the cure to have any effect.
